Selangor Nature Activities, Malaysia

National Zoo

The Zoo Negara or National Zoo is situated 13 km from the centre of Kuala Lumpur, standing like an oasis amidst a concrete jungle. It was officially opened to the public in 1963.

The zoo features about 400 species of Malaysian and exotic mammals, reptiles and birds. Of these, most are fish and bird and about a hundred are mammals and reptiles. Its aquarium "Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium" is a very popular attraction.

It displays over 80 species of aquatic animals, both marine and freshwater, including invertebrates.

Numerous paths wind between wooded groves and tree-lined enclaves where the animal enclosures are located. Among the more exotic exhibits are the Sumatran tiger, orang-utans, and gibbons. All are extremely rare outside of this part of the world.

For an opportunity to watch nocturnal animals, visit the zoo on Saturday nights.

To get there, take a taxi or go by the Putra Line subway. Tickets cost RM10.

Please note that all shows are subject to cancellation without prior notice.

A training session will be held if a show is cancelled.

Reservations for special occasions can be made at 03-41083427

Fireflies or "Kelip-kelip", Kuala Selangor

The firefly colonies of Kampung Kuantan and Kampung Bukit Belimbing are amongst the most popular tourist attractions in Selangor.

You will be amazed at the spectacular light displays from these unique insects - millions of them - which lived on the berembang trees that grow along Kuala Selangor's riverbanks.

Boats can be hired at the Kampung Kuantan jetty for these nocturnal tours. The skilled local oarsmen make this experience a memorable and unforgettable one.

The Firefly Park Resort in Kampung Bukit Belimbing offers visitors an opportunity to view the enchanting display as well as enjoy a night's stay at the available chalets.

Serendah International Orchid Park

Situated less than an hour's drive from Kuala Lumpur, this park offers an insight into farming and gardening using modern technology.

This 100-hectare ground produces a vast variety of tropical vegetables and flowers.

Visitors are welcomed to purchase the freshly harvested vegetables, or watch how the crops are cultivated.

Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM)

Nature lovers will enjoy a visit to this huge forest reserve, located in Kepong on the north-western fringe of Kuala Lumpur.

Gain an insight into Malaysia's tropical flora and fauna from its various arboretums (living museums of trees) and wetland area.

Walk through the nature trails or visit the herb gardens and marvel at its 15,000 species of plants. The park's canopy walkway, suspended 30m above ground level, offers a memorable and thrilling experience.

On clear days, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city skyline and the surrounding greenery from up here.

FRIM also has a camping ground, picnic areas, jogging trails and a souvenir shop.
