Food in Ipoh
Ipoh is noted for good, reasonably priced Chinese fare, particularly
Sar Hor Fun (soup noodles), Char Kuey Teow (fried flat rice
noodles) and chicken rice with bean sprouts.
Popular eating places include Wooley Food Centre on Jalan
Leech, Medan Selera on Jalan Gopeng and Medan Selera Stadium,
which has a variety of food stalls, on Jalan Dato Tahwil Azhar.
Also, there is an array of nasi kandar restaurants along Jalan
Yang Kalsom.
Snacks that are favourites with visitors include Menglembu
groundnuts, Kampar Chicken Biscuits and Char Tai (Bean Curd
Sticks). A popular Malay delicacy is rending tok, richly flavored
dried beef cooked with coconut milk and chili paste.
Local fruits
Perak's most famous fruit is pomelo (also known as shaddock),
a large juicy citrus fruit about the size of a football. The
best pomelos are reputed to be from Tambun, about 10 minutes'
drive east of Ipoh.
The area around Bidor is well-known for its crunchy and juicy
guavas. Peanuts and petai (a kind of bean in a long green
pod that is reputed for its 'kidney cleansing properties',
distinct taste and odour) are much sought after by visitors
to Perak. Other seasonal fruits include mangoes, rambutans,
durians and mangosteens.
