Alor Setar

The capital city of Alor Setar lies a little over a 1-hour drive north of Penang on the North-South Expressway, leading to the Thai border.

Having been a Thai vassal state at a point in its history, several buildings show Thai architectural influences.

The town is also noted for being the birthplace of two of the country's most prominent leaders, the first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and the fourth Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
