Located
on the south-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Malacca
was an important trading post in Malaysia's early history
and attracted South-east Asian, Chinese and Indian traders
from the region.
Founded by a refugee prince named Parameswara, Malacca rose
to become a powerful trade hub between the East and the West.
With a rich trade in spice, gold, silk, tea, opium, tobacco
and perfumes, it was governed by different Western colonial
powers at various times. Reflecting past Portuguese, Dutch
and English rule, parts of the city still retain an old-world
charm.
The city's icon, A'Famosa (Porta De Santiago), was built
by the founder of the Portuguese empire in the East - Alfonso
d'Albuquerque.
Noted for its food and cultural dances, Portuguese Square
was built in the late 1980s, styled after a typical Portuguese
mercado.
