First
brought to Peninsular Malaysia by Arab and Indian traders
during the 13th century, Malaysia embraces a progressive Islam
that permeates every aspect of life.
Islam's influence is reflected in the country's architecture,
cuisine and lifestyle.
Architecture with strong Islamic inspiration includes Putrajaya
(Malaysia's new administrative capital), the National Mosque
and the Islamic Arts Museum. Cultural customs include Friday
prayers for Muslim men and headscarves for Muslim women.
The fasting month of Ramadhan transforms many streets into
bustling food markets selling an array of local delights.
Celebrating the end of the fasting month and the start of
a new year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Eid Mubarak is a truly
Malaysian festival.
Warm and hospitable, it is customary for Muslims to have
'open houses' where all are welcomed to join the festivities.
